CONCORD, N.C. -- It's easy enough to suggest that Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 will be ultra-competitive when you consider that the first 40 cars in the 43-car field were separated on the speed chart by less than a second a lap in qualifying.
Alas, the reality is that maybe five drivers have a decent shot at winning here, barring a quirky rain-influenced finish like last year, when
David Reutimann became a first-time winner by having good fortune with the rain gods.
And the most likely of those potential winners,
Jimmie Johnson, probably has better than a 50-50 shot to steer his car into victory lane at Charlotte Motor Speedway, based on past and present performance at this 1.5-mile speedway.
For one thing, Johnson has won six of the last 14 races at Charlotte, so he almost has a 50-50 shot just based on past performance.
For another thing, Johnson had his No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet right up there near the top of the speed chart in the final practice sessions here Saturday.
