Two important pieces of the human element in the
Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR-dominating machine have signed on for more action, the team announced Friday.
Chad Knaus, crew chief for
Jimmie Johnson throughout his four-year reign at the top of the
Sprint Cup series, and
Alan Gustafson, the team leader of
Mark Martin's No. 5 Chevy, both signed long-term deals to stay with the team through 2015.
"I'm pretty pleased obviously. I've spent the majority of my life at Hendrick Motorsports since 1993 and I'd have a hard time thinking I'd ever go somewhere else," Knaus said Friday during a press conference at Richmond International Raceway, where the series races Saturday night.
"This No. 48 team and the No. 24 team are very important to me and I'm glad to be a part of that and I want to stay here for a long time to come."
Their re-signings had been expected, though they were a bit delayed. Reports surfaced just before Johnson won his fourth straight championship in November that Knaus had re-signed simultaneous to Johnson signing an extension with Hendrick to drive through 2015.
That report was later denied, and it left minor speculation as to why Knaus -- whose current deal with Hendrick was to expire at the end of the 2010 season -- hadn't also signed an extension.
