Clint Bowyer Wins Pole for Nationwide Race at Daytona, Danica Fourth

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Up until the final few minutes of Friday's NASCAR Nationwide Series qualifying, it looked as if IndyCar star-turned-NASCAR newbie Danica Patrick may just have landed herself the pole position at stock car's most famous track, Daytona International Speedway.

Midway through the session Patrick laid down the fastest lap of the afternoon bumping veteran Carl Edwards off the top spot and igniting a buzz around the garage area. Had her lap stood, she would have been the first woman to win a Nationwide Series pole since Shawna Robinson did it in March 1994.

Instead, another newcomer, Landon Cassill, knocked Patrick out of the top spot only to have Sprint Cup Series veteran Clint Bowyer come in and better them both. Bowyer's lap of 180.821 mph in the Kevin Harvick-owned No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet earned the former series champ the pole position for Saturday's DRIVE4COPD 300 and stifled the building frenzy around a possible Patrick front row start.

Cassill will start alongside him while another late qualifier Dale Earnhardt Jr,. took the third position. He'll start next to Patrick on the second row; he owns both cars.

This is only Patrick's 13th Nationwide Series start in her highly-publicized racing double as a full-time driver in the IZOD IndyCar Series and a part-timer in NASCAR's second-tier Nationwide circuit.

"It's been a fast car the whole time we've been here,'' Patrick said, as she watched the remaining few cars qualify. "No matter what happens now, it'll be a good starting position. This is a big deal and for it to come at Daytona, it's 10 times a bigger deal.''

Danica Patrick Unveils NASCAR 2011 Schedule

IndyCar driver Danica Patrick confirmed her 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule Wednesday and will compete in four markets that she didn't visit last season in her stock car debut.

Patrick, who races full-time for Andretti Autosport in the IZOD IndyCar Series, will again run 13 Nationwide Series races -- the bulk of the schedule coming before and after her open-wheel commitments.

As expected Patrick will open the year in the Feb. 19 Nationwide 300-mile race at Daytona International Speedway, and will compete in the next three races on the schedule in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Bristol, Tenn.

After running the opening races of the IndyCar Series, Patrick then returns to the seat of the JR Motorsports' No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet for summer races at Chicago and Daytona, then, for the first time, at the road course in Montreal, and the ovals in Richmond, Va., and Kansas.

Patrick will finish out the year in Fort Worth, Phoenix and the finale at Homestead-Miami, where she recorded her best start (fifth) and finish (19th) of 2010.

"I have a much different perspective heading into this season,'' Patrick said. "I know a little more of what to expect, and I'm not as out of my element.

"I've had a year to work with my team, and there is a comfort level that comes with returning to some of these tracks. It's obvious experience goes a long way in this sport. Thanks to everyone at Go Daddy and JR Motorsports that have been incredibly supportive throughout this process."

Joining Patrick at Daytona will be fellow IndyCar driver Milka Duno, who announced Wednesday she is entered in the Feb. 12 ARCA Series opener.

Kyle Busch Wins Nationwide Race, Danica Patrick Leads Lap, Finishes 19th

As Kyle Busch motored to a comfortable victory in the Nationwide season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway Saturday, Danica Patrick led her first lap in NASCAR racing before settling for a 19th-place finish, nonetheless her best ever in the series.

Busch dominated the event before winning by about a second over Kevin Harvick. Series champion Brad Keselowski was third, followed by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Trevor Bayne.

It was Busch's record-settiing 13th victory in the Nationwide series this year, and it clinched the owner's championship for Joe Gibbs Racing, even though Keselowski won the driver's title. Busch did not run in every race this year and thus did not compete for the driver's title.

"That says it all right there, boys!" Busch shouted on his radio as he took the checkered flag. "You guys are the stuff. I can't do it without you guys. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

"This is fun," he added while still circling the track. "This is what it is all about. I wish I had something for tomorrow, but we'll play with teammates tomorrow and try to get them one."

Danica Patrick Has Target on Her as She Learns Lessons at Phoenix

The stock car education of Danica Patrick provided some graduate school lessons in bumping and banging at Phoenix International Raceway Saturday.

"I feel like I have a target on me," Patrick said at one point during a long day on the one-mile oval.

Patrick finished 32nd, seven laps down, after tagging the wall with 43 laps to go while running in 25th. She had to make an unscheduled pit stop to change tires and repair the damage, and that's where she lost most of the extra laps.

Her car lost traction and became loose while running below Michael Annett through turn one. She lost control, nearly spun and hit the wall with the right rear of her car, but was able to continue until making the emergency stop.

Earlier, Patrick got shoved around and did some of her own shoving with two other drivers, Tony Raines and Alex Kennedy.

Patrick gave some payback to Kennedy, hitting his rear bumper as she shot past on one lap just before she hit the wall.

"There's some people out here that haven't played fair today," she said on her radio just before the wall-banging incident.

Brad Keselowski Wins Charlotte Nationwide Race, Danica 21st

CONCORD, N.C. -- With trash on his radiator grille and four worn tires, Brad Keselowski ran away from the field in the final laps of the Dollar General 300 Friday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The Nationwide Series points leader padded his lead as he took his fifth victory of the year and his 11th career win. It was his first checkered flag at the 1.5-mile Charlotte track.

Keselowski now leads Carl Edwards in the Nationwide championship points race by an almost-insurmountable 450 points with four races remaining. Edwards finished 13th.

Keselowski led 46 laps, including the final 35 laps, and won by about 10 car lengths, or 1.137 seconds, over Martin Truex Jr. Finishing third was Justin Allgaier, followed by Joey Logano and Clint Bowyer.

"I'm so mentally exhausted after this race," Keselowski said. "I thought that was the best race I've ever seen in my life. That was awesome."
