Coming on strong during the final eight races with seven spins or crashes, including a final spin (at right) during the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Ambrose easily outdistanced the competition in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series to post a season-leading 19 incidents and win the title by two.

Sadler, meanwhile, found uncommon consistency in the final stretch, chalking up only a single yellow flag in an incident at Martinsville Speedway during the last eight races. That brought his season total to 15, a number easily surpassed not only by Ambrose, but by hard-luck Sam Hornish Jr., who reached the second-highest total of 17 after the misfortune of four more incidents in the final eight races, including two in the Martinsville race.

Kyle Busch and Joey Logano were tied for fourth in our exclusive FanHouse crash and spin roundup, with 14 incidents apiece.

Drivers involved in 13 spins or crashes in the 36-race schedule, or one every three races, were Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski and Juan Pablo Montoya.

In our tally, we count an incident on a driver's tally if his car is listed as being involved in a spin or a crash that brings out a yellow flag. Caution periods caused by stalled cars, engine failures or debris do not count, unless a spin or crash was involved and a car number listed.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Two unlikely names finished in the top 10 at Richmond Saturday, however, and were left out of the limelight despite strong and somewhat surprising performances.

Marcos Ambrose ended with a fifth-place finish -- just his second of the 2010 season -- while A.J. Allmendinger had to hang out to a loose race car at the end to finish eighth. at the Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway.

Ambrose has two straight top-10 runs on Richmond's 3/4-mile D-shaped oval, improving on his ninth-place run in May.

"It was hard out there racing with the contenders for The Chase, I wanted to run hard, but at the same time I didn't want to ruin their championship," Ambrose said. "In the past two weeks we have been a contender on two different types of oval tracks, which is gratifying."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Ambrose, NASCAR's resident Aussie and a road racing phenom, once again saw a better-than-good shot at winning Sunday's Nationwide Series race in Montreal slip away -- just, of course, as he was preparing to drive away from the competition.

A faulty battery and a miserable attempt at trying to change it in the pits dropped Ambrose from the lead to two laps down quicker than a spectator making a trip to the concession stand.

The sad part of all of this is that you could have almost seen it coming. Even as he made a wild save with his car completely sideways in the grass while charging for the lead or when he stalked Carl Edwards and passed the No. 99 for the race's top spot.
Marcos Ambrose Extends Record of Road Racing Bad Luck originally appeared on Motorsports FanHouse on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 16:42:00 EST .

MONTREAL, N.Y. (AP) -- Marcos Ambrose again took care of business in Nationwide qualifying at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

All he has to do now is finally take advantage of starting up front at the tricky 14-turn layout. Ambrose turned a fast lap of 97.079 mph Saturday to edge Canadian star Jacques Villeneuve's 96.924 mph and take the pole for Sunday's Nationwide Series race.

"I've led more laps here than anybody else and haven't been to Victory Lane," said Ambrose, who won the pole a year ago, led 60 of 76 laps over the 2.7-mile circuit, and was passed by Carl Edwards in the final turn. "The race tomorrow could go any way. This race is hard on equipment, hard on tempers."

Joey Logano, who finished second to Ambrose at Watkins Glen three weeks ago, qualified third at 96.650 mph, while defending race winner Carl Edwards was fourth at 96.344 mph. Series points leader Brad Keselowski will start eighth.

Qualifying was divided into eight groups, with assignments based on practice times from the first session, which Villeneuve and Edwards topped with identical speeds. Villeneuve and Ambrose kept leapfrogging one another on each of their three laps before Ambrose finally won.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Filed under: Ford, Sprint Cup, NASCAR
As speculated, Australian driver Marcos Ambrose has officially signed a multi-year contract to drive the Richard Petty Motorsports No. 9 Ford in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series beginning in 2011.

In its announcement Tuesday, the team also confirmed that Stanley Black & Decker will now be the primary sponsor of the car next year, replacing Budweiser, which goes to Kevin Harvick's No. 29 Chevrolet.

The move will reunite Ambrose with Ford Motor Company, which played a key role in bringing the former Australian V8 Supercar champ to America in 2006. He will replace Kasey Kahne, who revealed last week he is moving to Red Bull Racing for 2011 before joining the Hendrick Motorsports organization for 2012.

"It's a journey that I'm on -- this NASCAR journey -- (and) I'm very excited to be able to stay in the sport," Ambrose said during a press conference at Stanley's world headquarters in Connecticut.

Also, RPM announced last week that former open-wheeler A.J. Allmendinger will remain driver of the team's No. 43 Ford next season. Paul Menard will move from RPM to Richard Childress Racing in 2012, and it remains unclear where the RPM team's other driver, Elliott Sadler, will end up next season. Stanley has been a long-time sponsor of Sadler's No. 19 Ford at RPM.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
