The horrific crash at the end of the Indianapolis 500 was worse than previously reported.
Driver Mike Conway suffered a broken back as well as a broken leg, and will have to wear a back brace for three months that will prevent him from racing, the Indy Racing League reported Monday.
In addition, Ryan Hunter-Reay suffered a broken finger in the crash that will require a splint.
Conway had surgery Sunday night to repair fractures in his lower left leg. "He also has a soft tissue injury to his lower left leg and is anticipated to have another surgical procedure later this week," an IRL statement said.
His back injury was a compression fracture of one of his thoracic vertebrae.
Hunter-Reay was scheduled to have surgery Monday on his left thumb and will be fitted with a carbon fiber splint, "which should allow him to participate at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend," the IRL said.
Conway was injured on Lap 199 when he ran into the back of Hunter-Reay's fuel-starved, sputtering car coming out of turn three. Conway's car was launched into the air and ripped itself apart on the retaining fence. The car was torn in half.
