What a week! On Monday night we got word that Rick and Linda Hendrick were involved in a plane crash in Key West, Florida. Both sustained non-life threatening injuries. The crash came five years and one week after the plane crash that took the lives of John and Ricky Hendrick and five others. On Tuesday night, former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield was arrested on possession of methamphetamine charges after the Catawba County Sheriff’s office executed a search warrant searching for stolen items. Mayfield’s attorney said Mayfield had no knowledge of the stolen items on his property or the meth. On Wednesday, Michael Waltrip Racing announced that David Reutimann would not drive for the team in 2012. He’s being replaced by Mark Martin. And finally, NASCAR parked Kyle Busch for the weekend after he intentionally wrecked Ron Hornaday Jr. under caution Friday night. This is the NASCAR week that was, October 30 to November 5, 2011.

Michael Waltrip Racing and JTG Daugherty Racing led the news this week after the teams were heavily penalized following Talladega. After finding windshields for the #00, #56 and #47 did not meet specifications NASCAR suspended all three crew chiefs through the end of the season and fined them $50,000 each, put MWR Director of Competition Bobby Kennedy on probation through the end of the year and took 25 owner and driver points from each team. In other news, UPS announced this week they would return to Roush Fenway Racing as a full associate sponsor with Carl Edwards as well as sponsor for one race. What this means for RFR’s David Ragan is unclear. This is the NASCAR week that was, October 23 to 29, 2011.

Plans for 2012 led the news this week with crew chief rumors and a scaled back Richard Childress Racing. The Charlotte Observer reported last week that Penske Racing crew chief Steve Addington was leaving the team at the end of the year. Addington denied the rumor. Joe Gibbs Racing said this week that the team had conversations with crew chief Greg Zipadelli and that a change in his role had not come up. In other news, team owner Richard Childress said this weekend that the team would likely have three cars next season. This is the NASCAR week that was, October 9 to 15, 2011.

Clint Bowyer led the news this week with the announcement that he had signed with Michael Waltrip Racing for the 2012 season and beyond. The team will be sponsored by 5 Hour Energy for 24 races. No word on who the crew chief will be for the team. In other news, Turner Motorsports announced this week that sponsor Dollar General would leave the team at the end of the season. Driver Reed Sorenson was also released from the team immediately. The reason for Sorenson’s departure is still not entirely clear. This is the NASCAR week that was, October 2 t0 8, 2011.

Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson were the talk of week after the second Chase race of the year at New Hampshire. Stewart won his second straight propelling him into points lead, while Johnson found himself in unfamiliar territory, having to overcome a growing deficit with just eight races to go. In other news, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing named John Probst head of engineering. Probst joined the team from Red Bull Racing. This is the NASCAR week that was, September 25 to October 1, 2011.

Tony Stewart pulled off a fuel mileage victory in the opening race of the Chase putting him just 7 points from the Chase lead last weekend at Chicago. It was movement to Michael Waltrip Racing that led the news this week though. Richard Childress Racing Competition Director Scott Miller left the teamto take a similar position at MWR. Rumors also continue that Clint Bowyer will sign with the team, taking the place of JTG Daugherty Racing. In other news, Eddie Sharp Racing announced this week it had purchased the #8 and #33 teams from Kevin Harvick Inc. This is the NASCAR week that was, September 18 to 24, 2011.

Paul Menard and Richard Childress Racing led the chatter this week as the two were the subject of rumors about an intentional spin to help RCR driver Kevin Harvick last weekend at Richmond. The team denied the accusations and NASCAR said this weekend they found no evidence to suggest it occurred. In other news, rumors about Clint Bowyer’s future remained at the forefront this week. According to various internet reports Bowyer was rumored to Michael Waltrip Racing in a third car with sponsor 5-Hour-Energy. MWR said they have had talks with Bowyer but were not ready to announce anything. This is the NASCAR week that was, September 11 to 17, 2011.

Kevin Harvick Inc. led the news this week as the team announced they would be merging their Nationwide operations with Richard Childress Racing and team owner Kevin Harvick said they would be ending their Truck program. The rumors have persisted for weeks that trouble was brewing at KHI. Harvick said it was a business decision to end the team’s involvement. In other news, Rockingham Speedway announced this week the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series would be returning to the track. It will be the first NASCAR national series event the track has hosted since 2004. And finally, Clint Bowyer’s future in NASCAR continues to be the question of the moment. Richard Childress and Bowyer echoed each other this week saying a deal for the driver to return to RCR in 2012 appeared unlikely. This is the NASCAR week that was, September 4 to 10, 2011.
