MISANO ADRIATICO, Italy (AP) -- Japanese teenager Shoya Tomizawa died after he crashed and was hit by two other riders during Sunday's Moto2 race at the San Marino Grand Prix in the sport's second fatality in eight days.

The 19-year-old Tomizawa lost control of his bike and hit his head on the track as his bike flipped over. While on the track, he was hit at full speed by riders Alex De Angelis and Scott Redding.

A statement on the MotoGP website said Tomizawa died of cranial, thoracic and abdominal trauma.

Tomizawa was initially put on an artificial respirator at the Misano World Circuit medical centre before he was taken to a hospital in Riccione, where he died.

"I'm truly devastated about what happened to Shoya," De Angelis said. "I'm close to his family and all of them loved him a lot. ... In moments like this nothing seems to matter.

A 13-year-old boy was killed racing his motorcycle Sunday. If that shocks you, chances are you just don't understand the sport.

Lucky for your kids.

Not so lucky was Peter Lenz, all 81 pounds of him.

"The fatal accident almost certainly will spark a debate about how young is too young," the AP story said.

Well let's hope so. Kids have to be 16 to get a license to drive a car 70 mph. But we let 12-year-olds drive motorcycles 120 mph?

I don't want to come off as a namby-pamby parent who won't let his kids climb a tree, but what am I missing here?

Everything, according to fans of tykes of motorbikes.

"God's speed to the family of Master Lenz and don't let the ignorant masses question your decision making as parents."

So read one of the thousands of Internet comments since Peter (I can't bring myself to call him "Lenz") was killed at a U.S. Grand Prix Racers Union event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The U.S. Grand Prix Racers Union does not plan to hold a formal investigation into the death of a 13-year-old motorcycle racer in Indianapolis over the weekend.

Stewart Aitken-Cade, a spokesman for the sanctioning body, says the union will discuss ways to make the sport safer. He also says safety measures will be reviewed.

"I don't believe there are grounds for anything drastic," Aitken-Cade said in a phone interview. "That doesn't mean we're not going to look at anything that we can do to prevent something like this from happening again. This is the first accident we've had like this in nine years, and that's a tremendous safety record."

On Sunday, Peter Lenz of Vancouver, Wash., died after being run over at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

FanHouse Newswireby FanHouse NewswireINDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The death of a 13-year-old motorcycle rider at Indianapolis Motor Speedway cast a shadow over Sunday's races at the historic track and prompted mourning competitors to defend the development system for the dangerous circuit.

Peter Lenz of Vancouver, Wash., fell off his bike during the warmup lap for the day's first race at Indianapolis and was run over by another motorcycle, driven by a 12-year-old.

Medical workers immediately placed Lenz in a neck brace, put him on a stretcher and began chest compressions while taking him to a hospital.

Several hours later, he was pronounced dead.

Lenz's father reported his son's death on his Facebook page as the county coroner confirmed the fatality.

"Peter passed away early this morning when he was apparently struck by another rider," read a posting on Lenz's Facebook page, which was signed "Dad."

"He passed doing what he loved and had his go-fast face on as he pulled onto the track," Lenz's father wrote."The world lost one of its brightest lights today. God Bless Peter and the other rider involved. #45 is on another road we can only hope to reach. Miss you kiddo."
