Is There A Truck Series Championship Curse?

I started to think about this post a few weeks ago. At the time, Germain Racing, for the second season in a row, was threatening to shut down Todd Bodine’s #30 team for a lack of sponsorship. It was stunning to think the reigning series championship was about to be parked for a lack of sponsorship. The troubles at Germain though are nothing new for Series champions. Consider the following cases.

NASCAR veteran Ted Musgrave won the 2005 Truck Series championship driving for Jim Smith and Ultra Motorsports. The two had a long and fruitful run together including 16 wins, 12 poles and that one championship. Not long after winning in ’05 though the team closed the doors after losing support from Mopar and failing to get support from Ford.

Musgrave was lucky enough to find another ride with Germain for the following two seasons, but never matched his success with Ultra. He had a short stint with HT Motorsports before exiting the sport mid way through the 2008 season.

Ron Hornaday, Jr. won championships in 2007 and 2009 and has undoubtedly had a very successful run with Kevin Harvick Inc. and Dale Earnhardt Inc. before that. It was after Hornaday’s 2009 championship that his long time crew chief Rick Ren left KHI for the newly created Kyle Busch Motorsports.

Since then Hornaday has won just three races (compare that to six each in 2008 and 2009) and has just 17 top-fives (compare to 15 in 2009 and 14 in 2008) and 20 top-tens (compare to 20 in 2009 and 18 in 2008).

Certainly winning the championship hasn’t been devastating to Hornaday’s career, but the once dominant team is no more. Losing Rick Ren was nothing short of very bad luck.

The saddest case of all is Johnny Benson who won the 2008 Truck Series championship with Bill Davis Racing. Benson joined the team in 2004 and together they scored 14 wins, 50 top-fives and 72 top-tens. Benson though faced a fate similar to his contemporary Ted Musgrave when the team shut down shortly after the end of the season.

Tom Deloach and Red Horse Racing brought Benson on in 2009 but he made it just eight races before the team was shut down due to a lack of sponsorship. Just a week after that Benson was seriously injured in a SuperModified race.

It looked like Benson may have a chance to return in 2010 with Kyle Busch Motorsports, but sponsorship never materialized and Benson raced just a few times for various organizations.

That brings us back to Todd Bodine. He received a reversal of fortune after Randy Moss Motorsports, on its last legs but with a very lucrative sponsorship deal, agreed to a “partnership” with Germain to keep Bodine in a ride through the end of the season.

Is there a curse? Maybe not. But in the last six seasons at least, it’s undeniable that there are some strange instances of bad luck for the series’ championship winner.

BREAKING NEWS: Bodine To Race At Iowa With International Trucks Sponsorship

We are hearing today that Germain Racing and reigning Truck Series champion Todd Bodine have secured sponsorship for this weekend at Iowa from International Trucks.  Bodine will race on Saturday with Mike Hilman Jr. crew chiefing, but some details have yet to be worked out, including the truck’s number.

After last Friday night’s race at Kentucky Speedway, Bodine told reporters that unless a deal was in place early this week, his team wouldn’t be racing in Iowa.  The team has struggled to put together regular sponsorship for Bodine since Lumber Liquidators left following the 2008 season, and they were facing the reality of parking their #30 for multiple races through the end of this season.  And, it’s only been a few short weeks since driver Justin Lofton left Germain for Eddie Sharp Racing.

There is no word on if this deal with International is for the remainder of the season, or what it means for Randy Moss Motorsports, who’ve had the International sponsorship since last season.  We will keep you updated as we find out more.

2010 TNI Rumor Scorecard

At the beginning of the last two years since we opened TNI, we’ve done a rumor scorecard for the previous season.  (See the ’08 and ’09 scorecards here and here.)  With 2010 now officially behind us, I figured it was time to grade ourselves and our reporting for the year.  Before I do though, let me just point out that for 2008 and 2009, our record is 19-3-3 (19 correct, 3 wrong, 3 pushes).  Here we go…

Marc Davis To Race At Vegas: Our first rumor of 2010 was that Marc Davis would run the NNS race at Las Vegas.  The deal was 99% done we’d heard (he was even on the entry list), but ended up falling apart at the last minute.  Davis didn’t end up racing.  We’ll call it minus one for the Insiders.

Another New Crew Chief for Robby Gordon: We heard in March that after starting the season with Iain Watts as crew chief, newly hired “consultant” Larry Carter would be taking over as crew chief for RGM.  We know for certain that he did call some races for the #7 team, but whether or not he was ever actually officially the crew chief is unclear.  Carter was one of several to call a race for RGM in 2010.  We’ll call this a push.

NASCAR Considering Eliminating Catch Can Man: With the Truck Series as a test bed, we told you early in April that NASCAR was considering eliminating the catch can position and having both the Cup and Nationwide Series use the new self-vented fuel can.  Over the course of the year, NASCAR listened to feedback on the rule change from many in the sport, and in the end, the rule was implemented.  The official announcement was made just a few short weeks ago.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Front Row Penalized Over Bleeder Valves: After Pocono in June, we were the first to tell you about a possible penalty coming from NASCAR over Front Row Motorsports’ possible use of illegal bleeder valves.  We heard a short time later that NASCAR was preparing to hand down their biggest penalty for cheating ever.  In the end however, Front Row was penalized but it wasn’t a record sanction.  Before the penalty was announced, one unsubstantiated rumor we’d heard was that FRM owner Bob Jenkins actually privately pleaded with NASCAR to levy a smaller fine and points penalty, as anything larger would have put him out of business completely.  Obviously, there was no way of knowing if that was actually true or not.  We’ll call this plus one, and minus one for the Insiders.

Billy Johnson To Drive for RFR at Watkins Glen: We were the first to tell you that GRAND-AM driver Billy Johnson would be making his NNS debut for Roush Fenway Racing at Watkins Glen.  Johnson started ninth in RFR’s #6 Ford, but was caught up in a wreck and finished 36th.  It was his only NNS race of 2010.  Plus one for the Insiders.

TJ Bell Racing with “Green” Sponsor: In August, we reported that T.J. Bell would be racing at Darlington with a new sponsor, Liberty Tire Recycling.  Bell went on to make two starts for MAKE Motorsports with Libery on board.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Rumors After Watkins Glen: After the NNS race at the Glen, we reported via Twitter that we’d heard NASCAR had taken a box of lugnuts from Marcos Ambrose’s team that they suspected were illegal.  The bit was confirmed later by Scene Daily’s Kenny Bruce, but NASCAR ultimately decided there was no issue.  In the same post, we told you that Kevin Conway’s days at FRM were numbered.  The team had grown tired of his poor performances, and they were looking to bring in another driver.  Following denials by his sponsor Extenze (they emailed us specifically), it was announced five days later that Tony Raines would replace Conway for the race at Michigan.  We also added that we’d heard Aric Almirola was a candidate for a Cup ride at RPM.  Almirola didn’t end up at RPM, but it was reported by both Fox Sports and ESPN that he’d had discussions with the team.  We’ll call that plus three for the Insiders.

Darnell & Kenseth To Run RFR NNS Cars: We told you late in August that Roush Fenway would add Erik Darnell and Matt Kenseth to the round robin of drivers getting starts in their NNS cars.  Darnell got three starts (Richmond, Dover, Texas), and Kenseth ran at Atlanta to go with two NNS starts he made earlier in the year.  Plus one for the Insiders.

RMM Shuts Down #81 Team: Following the Bristol Truck Series race, we told you that Randy Moss Motorsports was shutting down the #81 team of David Starr.  RMM did indeed close down their second team, but Starr never missed a beat.  After being let go from the #81, he moved over to SS-Green Light Racing and finished the season.  RMM would later run a second truck for Tayler Malsam in four races.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Turner Motorsports & Marc Davis: While we weren’t the first to report on the possible sale of Braun Racing to Steve Turner, we were the first to tell you it was a done deal and we gave you the first picture of what the new Turner Motorsports would look like.  Todd Braun did end up selling his team, and the new Turner Motorsports will have three NCWTS teams and four NNS teams.  They will also run Chevrolets.  And after a failed attempt to race at Las Vegas earlier in the season, we told you that Marc Davis would be running for R3 Motorsports at Dover.  Davis started 30th and finished 23rd.  Plus two for the Insiders.

Johanna Long & Tayler Malsam to Trucks: In September, we reported that both Malsam and Long would be making attempts in the NCWTS race at Las Vegas.  Both did race at Vegas, and they both ran more races towards the end of the season.  Plus two for the Insiders.

Trevor Bayne To RFR: We were the first to report that Bayne to Roush Fenway was a done deal, and that his new team would run a fifth NNS car for him at Kansas in October.  Bayne finished out the season with RFR, and is prepared to run a full NNS schedule in 2011, along with an unspecified number of Cup races.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Josh Wise To Drive At Charlotte: Josh Wise spent 2010 driving for several different organizations, and we reported in October that he would race at Charlotte for a team backed by veteran tire changer D.J. Copp.  Wise started 39th and finished 18th.  Plus one for the Insiders.

KHI, Elliott Sadler, RFR Trucks: Later in October we heard that KHI was putting together the personnel for a second full time Nationwide Series team, and that Elliott Sadler may run some races for them.  Both turned out to be true, as it was later announced that Sadler will run the full 2011 schedule for KHI with sponsorship from CitiFinancial.  We also told you that there were rumors that Ron Hornaday was shopping for a new NCWTS ride.  We’d heard he had conversations with several organizations, but he ended up re-signing with KHI.  The last bit we gave you was that Roush Fenway was working on resurrecting their Truck Series program.  This story has cooled way down since then, but there is still a small chance it could happen.  I’ll give us plus one, a push, and leave the RFR bit as still pending.

Caitlin Shaw To Race At Phoenix: In November we told you about yet another female driver who would be racing in 2010.  Caitlin Shaw, after making one start in 2009, returned to the Truck Series in a truck prepared by Mario Gosselin’s DGM Racing at Phoenix.  She started 33rd and finished 30th.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Skinner Out?  Kvapil In?: Our most recent rumor for you, we reported that Mike Skinner was likely out at Randy Moss Motorsports, and that the team would replace him with Travis Kvapil.  Skinner won’t talk, and no official announcement has come from the team, so we’ll leave this one pending.

As you can see, we had a busy year reporting on the happenings in NASCAR.  Our scorecard for the year looks like this: we had 17 correct, two wrong, two pushes, and still have two rumors pending.  Adding up all three seasons worth of news and rumors, that makes us 36-5-5.  We prove yet again that if you hear it from us, odds are pretty good that it’s true.  Our solid track record doesn’t do much to prove that we are who we say we are, but at the very least we are very well connected janitors…

Johanna Long & Tayler Malsam To Race Trucks At Vegas

When the Camping World Truck Series heads to Las Vegas this weekend, look for the entry list to be a little stronger.  We are hearing that both rookie Johanna Long and Tayler Malsam will return to CWTS competition in the desert.

First, expect an announcement on Monday that Long will be driving a truck prepared by her family’s race team, Panhandle Motorsports.  We’ve heard that her effort will be led by veteran crew chief Kevin “Cowboy” Starland, and that more races might be upcoming for Long and Panhandle for the 2010 season.  If she qualifies, the Vegas race will mark Long’s fourth start of the season.  In her previous three truck starts (for Billy Ballew Motorsports) coming at O’Reilly Raceway Park, Nashville Superspeedway, and Chicagoland Speedway, Long has scored two top 20 finishes.  Besides racing trucks, Long has spent the season making various latemodel starts at tracks in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, and has two USAR ProCup starts.

Malsam, who has been racing in the Nationwide Series since being released by Kyle Busch Motorsports early in the season, will return to the Truck Series in an entry fielded by Randy Moss Motorsports.  Malsam competed for RMM for the entire 2009 season before moving on to KBM for 2010.  Expect veteran crew chief Doug Wolcott to call the shots for Malsam’s team at LVMS.  Malsam ran the first seven truck races of the season for KBM before his team was shut down due to lack of funding.  The young driver from Washington was then given an opportunity to run for Braun Racing in the Nationwide Series and has since made 11 starts with a best finish of 11th.  No word on if any more truck races are planned for Malsam.

Moving forward, it’s always good to see new teams and young drivers getting a chance to make their mark in the sport.  Both of these drivers have a ton of potential, and adding competitive teams to entry lists is always a good thing.

Breaking News: RMM Shuts Down #81 Truck

We are hearing today that Randy Moss Motorsports has shut down its #81 Camping World Truck Series team effective immediately due to lack of funding.  The team, which has been running with David Starr this season, had only partial sponsorship to begin the season.  We are also hearing that several employees have been laid off, including crew chief Doug Wolcott.

There have been a ton of rumors floating around about RMM in the last several weeks, many of them mentioning a possible merger or sale of the team.    Mike Skinner’s #5 truck has full sponsorship for the season from International Trucks, Monaco Coaches, Exide, and PC Miler but Starr only had a partial deal with Zachry.

Through 16 races this season, Starr is ninth in CWTS points with 6 top tens and has an average finish of 13.2.   We’ll keep you posted if we hear any more.

Most NASCAR drivers like to talk. If things aren’t going well few hesitate to express their issues with those in charge. If they’re mad you can be sure the person on the opposite end will be fully aware of it. And luckily for them if their intended target isn’t willing to listen, there is a media corps that is more than happy to lend an ear and write a story.

Case in point: Mike Skinner.

Skinner of course went to work for David Dollar and Randy Moss last season after Bill Davis Racing closed its doors. The move positioned Skinner well with a team that appeared to be on the rebound/upswing. With veteran crew Eric Phillips on the box, the 52-year-old Skinner and his #5 team were able to score three wins and finish third in the points on a shoe-string budget. In classic Skinner style, he made sure everyone knew their money situation too – but he was a happy guy.

What a difference a year can make. Eric Phillips left the team in the off-season to take over a crew chief position at the new Kyle Busch Motorsports, and with Gene Nead at the helm, the team just hasn’t been the same. After five races Skinner is tenth with only two top-ten finishes. He’s no longer a happy guy.

The frustrated Skinner voiced his discontent with his hand-picked crew chief this past weekend to NASCAR.com.

“I appreciate Gene going like he went and helping Robby Gordon a couple weeks. I appreciate him doing that and getting the information on the tire and so on and so forth…By the same token, we really need to keep our eye on the ball.”

Note Skinner probably doesn’t actually mean he appreciates Nead’s excursion to help Robby Gordon. As I understand it, the extracurricular activity was supposed to be on the D.L.

Skinner also pointed criticism to Randy Moss for being an absentee owner.

“Randy’s a great guy, but he’s not involved as much … I’d love to see him get involved more. Maybe if we can win us a couple of races before football season starts …”

Now I understand Skinner’s frustrations with his team, and I think they are valid criticisms, but generally all of these things are issues you would want handled internally. I know if I’m David Dollar the last thing I want or need is for my driver to be spouting off to the media about the functioning of my organization.

Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not complaining. It’s always great to see a driver speak his mind. These insightful and at times cringe-worthy moments are what journalism is all about. Remember Kasey Kahne and his ‘I have no idea who is in charge moment’ last year? Priceless.

The media, fortunately for them, and perhaps unfortunately for team owners, can be a public conduit for getting things done. If drivers feel they aren’t being listened to at home, they have a means for broadcasting their grievances to the whole neighborhood. Chances are things will be changed. You can bet the Monday after Kasey Kahne’s comments he knew who was in charge. And I would imagine by now Mike Skinner and David Dollar have had a conversation about his comments this weekend.

Thankfully for all of us, for as long as there is a NASCAR and a media covering it, you can bet frustrated drivers will be more than happy to air out their team’s dirty laundry to get what they want.

2009 TNI Rumor Scorecard

After the 2008 season, we decided to look back over the season and see how we did in terms of reporting on rumors and breaking some news.  In the end, we got eight correct, had two pushes, screwed one up, and had three rumors outstanding.  With 2009 behind us, I thought it would be fun to again do the same thing.  I’m going to start with the three bits we had outstanding, and then we’ll move into 2009.

Fastenal to RCR:  After the info we heard, we thought this one was in the books.  Even Jayski reported at one point that this was going to happen, even mentioning a driver lineup.  But in the end, Fastenal ended up at JR Motorsports for the ‘09 season.  Scratch this one.

Rule Changes Coming to the Truck Series:  NASCAR did indeed make changes to the Truck Series rules for 2009, and we were close.  We first reported they were only going to allow only four crew members over the wall and that they would initiate a hard card limit.  They did indeed limit both, but we missed the crew limit by one.  It was five members over the wall and not four.  I’m still giving us the point here.  Plus one for the Insiders.

BDR Employees Laid Off:  This indeed was true, and what was left of BDR was turned into Triad Racing Technologies.  TRT supplies teams with Toyota engines, chassis, and some other services.  Plus one for the Insiders.

First Crew Member Tests Positive: In my post following the Daytona 500, I let you know that I’d heard NASCAR had caught it’s first offender of the new substance abuse policy.  We found out a short time later that it was a Mayfield Motorsports employee, and he was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR.  It was strange foreshadowing for the summer to come and drug testing.  Plus one for the Insiders.

RMM Cuts Salaries: Early in the season, we heard that Randy Moss Motorsports had cut it’s employees salaries by as much as 35%.  While no official announcement was ever put out, this was indeed true.  The budget for the #5 Tundra for Mike Skinner was limited at best, which led to the cuts.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Trouble At Trail: 2009 was supposed to be the first season for minority owned Trail Motorsport.  But what started off with much fan fare and press, fizzled before it ever got started.  We first told you in April about the problems internally at Trail.  On it’s own, the team never fielded a race car at a Truck Series, Nationwide Series, or Cup Series event.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Kyle Busch, Team Owner in 2010: We were the first to tell you about Kyle Busch’s plans to start his own NASCAR team for the 2010 season.  In July, we reported that construction was ongoing on a new race shop for Kyle and that he, Johnny Benson, and Brian Ickler may drive for the new team.  Busch will indeed have a team in 2010, with two full time trucks.  One for himself and Brian Ickler, and another for Tayler Malsam.  If sponsorship can be found, Benson may run a third truck.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Parker Kligerman, Wyler Racing, & Michael McDowell: In September we told you that ARCA driver Parker Kligerman would run some NNS races for Penske, that Wyler Racing may be closing up shop, and that Michael McDowell would run at New Hampshire for Thorsport Racing.  Kligerman ended up running at Kansas and Homestead for Penske Racing.  Wyler did make it to the end of the season, but from what we know just barely.  As of today, there is no word on Wyler Racing’s 2010 plans.  And finally, McDowell did run at NHMS for Thorsport.  He ran the #98 truck, that was painted up like a police car.  We will call that plus two and minus one for the Insiders.

Your Favorite Team and a Funded Driver: While we did write a post mentioning a rumor, we wrote the post more as commentary then actually reporting the rumor.  The post itself was about John Wes Townley and his impending move to Richard Childress Racing.  Townley will indeed race for RCR in 2010, and will compete full time in the NNS in the #21 Zaxbys Chevrolet.  Since we didn’t call the driver out, nor did we get anything wrong, I’ll give us a push.

Rick Ren Gone from KHI: We told you before Homestead that Kevin Harvick Inc. crew chief Rick Ren was leaving at the end of the season, possibly to take a managerial role at Kyle Busch’s new team.  This rumor was actually denied publicly by Kevin Harvick, but in the end turned out to be true.  Ren will serve as the Director of Operations for KBM this season.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Eric Phillips to KBM: To add to this stout lineup for 2010, we were the first to tell you about Eric Phillips leaving Randy Moss Motorsports for Kyle Busch Motorsports.  Phillips will serve as crew chief for the #18 truck piloted by Busch and Brian Ickler for this season.  We were certainly all over the KBM stuff in ‘09.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Biffle and Baker Curb: And last but not least, after it was reported by SceneDaily.com that Baker Curb was working on a deal with a Cup driver for the 2010 NNS season, we told you that Cup driver was Greg Biffle.  Biffle will pilot the #27 Red Man Ford Fusion for Baker Curb this season in an undetermined number of races.  Plus one for the Insiders.

Looking back over all the rumors, I think we had another pretty good year.  We got eleven right, missed two calls, and had one push.  So over the last two years, that makes us 19-3-3 on the scoreboard.  We certainly don’t know it all or hear it all, and we also won’t report every rumor we hear.   But I think this shows that when you hear a rumor from TNI, odds are pretty good it’s true.  What do you think?

Eric Phillips To Kyle Busch Motorsports

Less than two weeks after announcing their plans for 2010, we are hearing Kyle Busch Motorsports has snagged longtime Truck Series crew chief Eric Phillips. Phillips is expected to take over duties for the #18 truck driven by Kyle Busch and Brian Ickler.

Phillips joins KBM from Randy Moss Motorsports (formally Morgan-Dollar Motorsports) where he has been since 2005. Phillips was Dennis Setzer’s crew chief during the ‘05 season when Setzer won four races and finished second in the points. Prior to that, Phillips led Travis Kvapil to Toyota’s first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series win with the short lived Bang! Racing.

This past season, Phillips led veteran Mike Skinner to three wins, eight top-fives, 17 top-tens and three poles. Skinner finished third in the Championship standings.  

No word on a crew chief for the #56 truck driven by 20-year-old Tayler Malsam.

A Truck Series Rebound? And Rick Ren Leaving KHI?

This year has been a particularly brutal one for car counts in the Camping World Truck Series. While there usually is a full field, many teams choose to start and park. Looking at 2010 though things are looking up for the truck series.

Richard Childress Racing is expected to field at least one team in 2010 for team owner Richard Childress’ grandson Austin Dillon. The last time RCR fielded a full time truck series team was 1999. There have also been rumblings that Tim George Jr. will drive a second truck for RCR. As the original championship team in the series, it is exciting to see RCR make a return.

Newcomer organization Turner Motorsports (they will make their debut this weekend) also has plans to run one full time and one part time team in 2010. Ricky Carmichael has said he will jump from Kevin Harvick Inc. to the team to run the full season. In addition to running the #1 car in the Nationwide Series, James Buescher is also expected to run at least 19 races for the team.

And then there’s Kyle Busch Racing (or whatever it’ll be called). While nothing has been announced they are rumored to be running at least two teams in 2010. We’ve heard they might also field a third part time truck for Kyle. With some of the talent they are rumored to be bringing in, this team could be a force very quickly.

In addition to the above teams, Mario Gosselin has said he will run the full 2010 schedule with sponsorship from MyTireMonkey.com. Gosselin’s a two time USAR Pro Cup Champion. This year’s ARCA Re/Max champion Justin Lofton has also said he will go truck racing full time next season with primary sponsorship from his father’s cattle company.It’s uncertain where he’ll end up.

Most existing organizations while not necessarily locked up for 2010, are expected to maintain their truck counts. Just to name a few, Randy Moss Motorsports has said they will be back with Mike Skinner in 2010 and they hope to continue fielding a second truck. Kevin Harvick Inc. has said they will return next season with one full time and one part time truck. And Thorsport has re-signed Johnny Sauter for 2010 and will return with Matt Crafton as well.

Uncertainty does still remain with a few regulars though. Wyler Racing needs to find sponsorship to run the full 2010 schedule; something Stacy Compton says they’re still $500,000 short of. Circle Bar, which will lose James Buescher this year, may be down to just one team next season if a funded driver is not found. At Red Horse Racing the number of teams also looks heavily dependent on sponsorship. Team owner Tom DeLoach has said Timothy Peters will be back though.

Obviously the loss of Roush Fenway is difficult for the series. 2010 will be the first time since its’ inception that Roush won’t compete. Their scaled back efforts this season though made the loss, less difficult to deal with.

Perhaps this post is coming a little too early because there are still quite a few guys who don’t have anything locked up yet, but I’m optimistic 2010 will be a strong year for the series. With ratings up and competition consistently good, I’m looking forward to next season.

Rick Ren Leaving KHI?

We’ve been hearing quite regularly for the last few weeks that crew chief Rick Ren will leave Kevin Harvick Inc. at the end of the season. He’s rumored to be heading to Kyle Busch’s new team to serve in a general manager type role.

As we first reported in July Kyle Busch is expected to start a team fielding two or more Camping World Truck Series teams and possibly a Nationwide Series team in 2010.

Rick Ren joined KHI in 2007 after a stint with Johnny Benson at the now defunct Bill Davis Racing. Since joining the team, he and Ron Hornaday Jr. have racked up 16 wins and one championship (a second looks inevitable this season). He has more than 30 years experience in NASCAR.

Sponsorship, or lack thereof has been on the mind of just about every team executive in NASCAR this season. While the year has been rough for the sponsorship market as a whole, in no place has it hit harder then in the Truck Series.

The biggest anomaly in the series are the amount of experienced, winning drivers that have been affected.

Take defending champion Johnny Benson. He became the latest victim of the economy this week after Red Horse Racing shut down his unsponsored team. I believe the only time the team actually had any deal was at Daytona with K&N. The rest of the time the truck has remained white.

Now he hear Timothy Peters is joining Red Horse from his own fledgling organization. Peters’ biggest asset is the Strutmasters sponsorship he brings with him.

Todd Bodine doesn’t quite know Johnny’s plight, but he has been driving race-to-race all season. Every time Bodine has been on the cusp of reaching his final race, sponsorship has come through and they have been able to continue. The brilliant thing this team has been doing is publicizing their struggle and they have gotten a lot of great exposure as a result.

Germain ran several very small sponsors early on in the season (which were plugged heavily during the broadcasts), and then signed Copart for the last several races. Copart has three races remaining with the team this season. After that the team finds itself in a familiar situation.

Another former champion feeling the pinch is 26-time winner Mike Skinner. He joined Randy Moss Motorsports this season after Bill Davis Racing folded. Skinner brought with him a partial sponsorship from Exide and some support from Toyota, but he and most especially his wife Angie have been working very hard to put together smaller deals for the holes in his schedule.

They have had everything from Daytona Beach law firm Rue & Ziffra to Bad Boy Mowers on the truck. Mike and Angie, instead of waiting and hoping on others to find deals, took the initiative and are keeping Mike’s career alive and still very vibrant.

Unfortunately NASCAR has been less than enthusiastic about furthering the Truck Series. It has become the overlooked series, almost an after thought by the sanctioning body. If you want an example of this look at purse money. Just something to consider; the top grossing driver, in terms of purse money, in the Cup Series is Tony Stewart. He has pulled in $3,459,120. In the Nationwide Series, Kyle Busch is tops; he has earned $506,620. In the Truck Series Todd Bodine holds the crown with $286,875 in winnings. He is not the norm either. The points leader at the moment, Matt Crafton, has pulled in $130,000 less than Bodine. While it is true it’s a little cheaper to run in the Truck Series, it’s not that much cheaper.

Another big issue the series faces is a lack of media exposure. While they have been making ratings strides on Speed, the untapped market is very large. Despite the extensive amount of programming that covers the other series, the Truck Series has very often left out in the cold.

And now we have reached the point where fewer than 30 trucks will even actually finish the race. At Texas there were only 22 trucks running at the end. This weekend there are 32 on the entry list and I counted at least six start and parks.

It’s hard not to commend the teams who are actually fighting and going the distance. I can’t say enough times how much I love the Truck Series. It is the most fun to be around and the best racing you’ll see most weekends. Unfortunately NASCAR has been slow to give the series the credit it deserves. It will be interesting to see how the remainder of the season plays out for those sponsor-challenged teams.
