Look for Sprint Cup moonlighters Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch to continue their Nationwide Series dominance.
CONCORD - The good news for many competitors in the NASCAR Nationwide Series is that reigning champion Kyle Busch is unlikely to compete in every race. The bad news is that Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski are.
A certain window of opportunity is opening, however. The ranks of the Sprint Cup moonlighters have thinned a bit. But Edwards, the 2007 Nationwide champion and runner-up the past two years, remains dedicated to competing full-time in Sprint Cup and Nationwide.
"Our goals are simple," said Edwards. "I want to win both championships.
Provided Busch doesn't change his mind - he hasn't totally eliminated the possibility of going for another title - the driver most likely to stand in Edwards' way is Cup rookie Brad Keselowski, now at Penske Racing. Keselowski finished third in points the past two years while competing at JR Motorsports.
The dominance of Cup drivers - which will continue, by the way - seems to have slowed down the development process of young Nationwide Series drivers in recent years. This year, however, opportunities for young drivers seem to be on the upswing. Keselowski's Penske teammate, Justin Allgaier, leads a class of promising young drivers that includes Colin Braun, Brian Scott, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and James Buescher.
Another Cup driver who plans to make a stab at the Nationwide Series championship is Paul Menard. Among others who might figure in the point race are Jason Leffler, Steve Wallace, Jason Keller, Brian Keselowski (Brad's brother) and John Wes Townley.
A new car will debut on July 2 at Daytona, though it's currently scheduled to be raced only four times.
